We were glad to speak, at the Ethiopian Soccer Federation of North America Mental Health Seminar about how to build personal and family mental health.
Three years ago, I did not know one other Therapist of Ethiopian ethnicity; since, a group of about 7 Ethiopian American Board licensed professional counselors meet and partner to serve various communities.
As an American who never knew Ethiopia as home but knew Ethiopia as family, I learn from them about how to serve as a Therapist in a more culturally sensitive way. I am so thankful also, because there are no resources I could reference to learn more about providing culturally sensitive professional counseling related to Ethiopian culture.
Culturally and racially sensitive therapy is foundational to effective therapy, as this helps a person feel understood, valued, and safe. In its absence, it is what I saw impeded numerous diverse community's freedom and ability to bring their whole self to therapy and to benefit from therapy.
